Barely changed through centuries, Dominica is the true face of the Caribbean – full of stunning natural beauty, joyous music, vibrant culture, and some of the world’s most friendly and inviting people.
Dominica may be the Caribbean island that has been least touched by civilization. It’s dense rainforests, lush mountain peaks, plentiful rivers, hidden waterfalls, colorful reefs, thermal hot springs, volcanic landscapes, and crystalline lake survive and thrive in our time just as they have for thousand of years. The island is simply breathtaking in all of its natural beauty.
To be sure, this unspoiled environment is now the major draw of Dominica, an eco-tourist’s vacation paradise. Hiking and mountain climbing – the latter a rarity amid the sandy beaches of the Caribbean – are ascendant activities. There are nearly 300 miles footpaths in a well-established national park system, and 4,000-foot mountain tower over “moonscapes” of sharp volcanic rocks.
Perhaps the most unusual, must-see sight on the island is the Boiling Lake in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The second largest hot springs in the world, it reaches temperatures of 180-197 degrees.
Lined with picturesque buildings, the capital city of Roseau is a bustling seaport. Stroll the cobblestone streets to the Old Market Plaza, which abounds with vendors selling all manner of tropical fruit and local handicrafts.
Although there is precious little nightlife, Dominica is well-known for its music. You’ll hear jazz, reggae-dancehall, calypso, and soca, all popular genres here. In autumn, the annual World Creole Music Festival in Roseau draws thousands who groove to three days and nights of pulsating rhythms.
