The “Coqui” is a tiny tree frog, about one inch long an a native to Puerto Rico.
Its skin is smooth, almost transparent, and changes color to blend with its surroundings. The name derives from its melodious song “co-key”, which lulls to sleep children and adults alike all over the island.
Being a nocturnal creature, it hides during the day and emerges at sundown to delight us with its nightly performances. The coqui song is at its sweetest and most joyous after a rainfall.
Many different species of small frogs create the family of the coquí. More than 16 different species live on the island, 13 of which occur in the Caribbean National Forest.
